Gravel quarries became important to the local economy in the early 20th century. By the 1940s, it was known as the "grain and gravel" town. As suburban growth reached northward, Carrolton was transformed. By 1980, the population had soared to more than 40,000.

Coyote Ridge Golf Club
in Carrolton has been voted the best public fee golf course in the entire metroplex. It's also been named one of the top five luxury courses in the area. The front nine greets intrepid golfers with an open and rolling links-style experience. Natural grass bunkers and lots of water add to the beauty and to the challenge. Meanwhile, the back nine meanders in and around a former Trinity River gravel quarry. Hundreds upon hundreds of pecan trees, oaks and elms frame the brightly colored seasonal flower displays.
