The first European settlers arrived in the area in 1842, and a mill was built in 1844. The community was named after the home town of many of the early settlers, Carrolton, Illinois. The town was fully reliant upon area agriculture until the late 1870s, when the railroad came through. Industrialization began to follow in the 1880s. By the mid-1880s, the population was about 150. Gravel quarries became important to the local economy in the early 20th century. By the 1940s, it was known as the "grain and gravel" town. As suburban growth reached northward, Carrolton was transformed. By 1980, the population had soared to more than 40,000. 

Parks and Recreation

Coyote Ridge Golf Club in Carrolton has been voted the best public fee golf course in the entire metroplex. It's also been named one of the top five luxury courses in the area. The front nine greets intrepid golfers with an open and rolling links-style experience. Natural grass bunkers and lots of water add to the beauty and to the challenge. Meanwhile, the back nine meanders in and around a former Trinity River gravel quarry. Hundreds upon hundreds of pecan trees, oaks and elms frame the brightly colored seasonal flower displays.

Blooms Candy and Soda Pop Shop takes visitors on a sweet journey to yesteryear. Vintage sodas and favorite candies from decades ago make for a memorable experience. It's a great place to load up on gifts and stocking stuffers too.


In just four years the Festival at the Switchyard has become a major north Texas celebration of music and more. The event is held in early November, and major headliners like Smashmouth and Sugar Ray have recenty performed. The are endless kids activities as well.
